Teaching Excellence Awards 2021

Teaching Excellence in Postgraduate Professional Programmes Award

This award recognises outstanding faculty members who are committed to promoting excellence in teaching and learning, to enhancing the quality of classroom experience. The award is given to faculty members who actively teach in the postgraduate professional programme(s).

The candidate will be a faculty member who demonstrates up-to-date knowledge of the field, employs exemplary teaching skills that encourage student engagement, and fosters the holistic development of students.

Factors for assessing nominees will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Effective course design that follows sound design principles
  • Integration of cutting-edge content knowledge, and/or pedagogy in courses and materials
  • Employment of effective teaching approaches that motivate and inspire students to learn
  • Being accessible to students for advice and mentoring
  • Supports the holistic development of students

Eligibility:

  • All Standing, Practice, Education and Lecturer track faculty who have more than 4 (four) years of full-time teaching experience at SMU.
  • Each nominee must have taught at least 2 (two) sections of postgraduate professional courses in the last calendar year (from January 2020 to May 2021).
  • Nominees typically have consistent high ratings in their student feedback reports.
  • Those developing new content are considered favorably.
  • Previous recipients for this award are not eligible for nomination for 2 years following their past awards. Evaluation Committee members, including FACTL members, are also not eligible for nomination.

Award for Winner:

  1. S$5,000 cash award
  2. Winner plaque

Award for Nominees:

All eligible nominees will receive S$1,000 as top-up to their DART fund.

Nomination Process

Nomination Process & Deadline

Each Postgraduate Professional Programmes Director can nominate 1 eligible candidate through their respective Dean’s office by 21 May 2021 (Friday), with a short write-up to support the nomination for the Teaching Excellence in Postgraduate Professional Programmes Award. The Dean’s Office would make the final decision on the choice of nominees for each school.

Number of nominations

According to the latest faculty statistics, SOA, SOE, SCIS, YPHSL and SOSS may nominate 1 candidate, while LKCSB may nominate 2 candidates for this award to the Office of Postgraduate Professional Programmes (OPGPP) no later than 28 May 2021 (Friday), via email: masters@smu.edu.sg.

Current Evaluation Committee members and previous recipients for this award are not eligible for nomination (for 2 years following their past awards).

Nomination document submission

After receiving the nominations from the Dean’s Office of each school, OPGPP will need to verify the nominees' eligibility against the stipulated criteria, before we follow up with the respective nominees on the nomination documents and guidelines required for submission.  As such, we appreciate your understanding and assistance to refrain from announcing the nominees' names to the community, until our official confirmation has been given.   

Nomination document submission deadline

As late submissions may not be reviewed, the nominees should ensure that their submissions (in soft copies only) reach OPGPP no later than 18 June 2021 (Friday), via email: masters@smu.edu.sg.

Evaluation Committee

Recipients will be selected by the FACTL and Dean of OPGPP, and announced at the SMU Teaching Excellence Awards Celebration or at a major university event (date to be announced).
