Dialogue with the Law Minister

On 27 January, Minister of Law Mr K. Shanmugam was at the Singapore Management University (SMU) for a dialogue with students from the School of Law.

During the two-hour dialogue session, Minister Shanmugam met with an enthused audience of some 60 law students who fielded a range of questions relating to the state of Singapore’s legal profession today, the prospects of aspiring lawyers given a more open legal environment and how we can nurture and promote the pro bono spirit among the legal firms and professionals.

Minister Shanmugam offered SMU students his unique insights and anecdotal comments on various legal issues.

At the no-holds barred session, students benefitted invaluably from the veteran lawyer’s unique insights and anecdotal comments on various legal issues.

Minister Shanmugam also commented on Singapore’s attractiveness as an arbitration centre and the prospects which are presented to Singapore’s talents. In this respect, he said that there are opportunities for Singapore’s law schools to become world-class and be among the best of the best.

The enthused audience fielded a range of questions on pertinent issues faced by students of law today.

Organised by the SMU School of law, the dialogue is part of a regular networking session for law students to chat with the Minister and discuss their views on pertinent issues faced by students of law today.
